How Much Does a Financial Advisor Cost?

Financial advisor fees vary based on the services provided, the complexity of your situation, and the advisor's business model. Most advisors use one of four pricing structures.

The four common fee structures

  • Assets under management (AUM): a percentage of the investments the advisor manages, often around 0.50% to 1.50% per year.
  • Flat planning fees: a one-time fee to build a financial plan, often $1,000 to $12,000 depending on complexity.
  • Hourly advice: typically $200 to $500 per hour.
  • Monthly subscription planning: a recurring fee for ongoing advice, often $100 to $1,000 per month, usually with no asset minimum.

Each approach has advantages depending on whether you want ongoing guidance, a one-time plan, or investment management.

How Money Planning prices advice

We use a monthly planning membership so you can get ongoing advice without a large investment minimum. Planning runs $100 to $1,000 per month across three tiers. Investment management, if you choose it, is a separate published percentage that decreases as your portfolio grows. You can see every number, including an interactive fee estimator, on our pricing page.

Is a financial advisor worth the cost?

For many people, yes, through better decisions, fewer costly mistakes, improved tax efficiency, and a lot less financial stress. The right structure depends on what you need most: ongoing guidance, a one-time plan, or coordinated investment management.
